One Night Can Have Far-Reaching Effects...Finding something to do on Sunday 30th March 2008 has never been easier, with 8 Ball Aitken, The Reversals, My Fiction, Brendan Leggatt & This Frozen Star (and more to come) lighting up the stage for a special benefit show for the OOFRAS refugee help organisation. Beyond the Night 2008 is helping raise funds to establish a Life Skills Clinic for Milpera State High School. Milpera provides intensive support to assist newly arrived immigrant and refugee students transitioning into secondary schools around Brisbane. “More often than not refugee kids have a rough start to life. They often spend their developmentally crucial years ‘in limbo’ in refugee camps. The challenges for these kids don't stop once they arrive in Australia as they have to learn a new language, navigate a new school system, and acquire new life skills” explains OOFRAS brainchild Clarissa Wilson. “The Life Skills Clinic will enable refugee kids access to specialist help to learn, develop, and adjust to school in Australia.” Occupational therapists from UQ will partner with teachers at Milpera to help refugee students with the challenge of settling into Australian schools. This is a pilot project, the first of its kind in Queensland. OOFRAS (Occupational Opportunities for Refugees and Asylum Seekers) is a group of occupational therapists striving to assist refugees to participate in the community. OOFRAS is supporting The Life Skills Clinic by helping raise the much needed funds to provide the service free of charge to the Milpera students. All of the funds raised at “Beyond the Night 2008” will be used to support this initiative. One night can have far-reaching effects, so get your friends and family together to support OOFRAS in great Brisbane style with a rockin’ live show featuring top local talent. When: Sunday 30 March, 4pm – 9pm For more information, visit www.oofras.com, www.milperashs.eq.edu.au |
